Internet Security and Data Protection

In our very first session of the course, the group was asked to think about internet security and data protection, meaning that we should think about how to protect our future pupils not to unveil personal data and secure them from any dangerous software.

It became clear that the teacher needs to talk to his/her pupils before the class starts to work in the computer room.

He/ She should elucidate the pupils about dangerous Spy- and Adware, computerviruses  and other harmful software which could destroy the functionality of the computer. Even though most computers have anti virus software installed they need to be refreshed every now and then to be up to date.

In terms of data protection the teacher has to make clear that the internet "never forgets". That means that even if a user deletes a blog entry, a comment or any other online contribution it stays in the internet. So every pupil has to think hard about what he or she published online. This could go that far you not may not be accepted for your designated job because many employers actually monitor their job applicants online for any "corpses in their basement".

In terms of productivity and effectivity of work the students need to know that every step they took online can be tracked by the teacher. The teacher eventually learns who in class worked more or less than other pupils. Every pupil should be encouraged to hand in their best piece of work for a satisfying result.

Here are five rules the class assembled for internet security and guaranteed productivity:

1. Never give away your password and change it regularly
2. Never open mails of unknown heritage
3. Never publish own/ others personal data
4. Never install unknown software
5. No off-topic surfing
