"Learning and Teaching with the New Media"

One of the major tasks for all participants of the course was the creation of the booklet "Learning and Teaching with the New Media". In order to cover as many aspects as possible for the use of New Media in the English classroom, the course was split up in groups of three. Every group was given a topic (=chapter of the booklet) for which several online tools should be tested and evaluated. Additionally, concrete teaching examples of how these particular tools could be used should be developed. These restrictive topics were:

1. Learning Vocabulary
2. Digital Storytelling
3. Collaborating online
4. Listening Comprehension
5. Publishing on the Web
6. Using Videos in the Classrooms

Digital Storytelling

Together with Jan Renke Samusch and Moritz Zöckler I choose the topic of "Digital Storytelling".

As already mentioned this booklet was one of the major tasks throughout the semester. The booklet contained two of the five graded tasks of the course syllabus (Task 3 & 4):

Task 3:

In order to convey the potential of applicability of the respective topics, every group was asked to briefly present one particular tool and demonstrate a concrete teaching example in front of the course.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the actual presentation because of a field trip in an other seminar. Nevertheless I wanted to contribute some content and information to our groups presentation. That is why I created a tutorial in which the creation of a digital comicstrip with the help of the online tool www.bitstrips.com is demonstrated.

Task 4:

After each group constituted teaching examples for their respective topic, an experienced teacher should evaluate these ideas. The teacher was supposed to display likes/ dislikes and advantages/ disadvantages. This evaluation on the other hand was asked to be visualized with the help of another online presentation tool called Prezi.

Conclusion about the booklet

Even though working in groups for the development for the booklet chapter consumed much time and effort I have to say that the effort was totally worth it. Not just because every group became experts in their specific fields, but because of the outcome in general.
It is highly satisfying to hold that booklet in your own hands, after you put so much time and work into it. It is even more satisfying than this e-portfolio. As long as this portfolio is online and not available in printed form, I rather prefer physical, written and tangible work outcomes. You literally have something in your hands after all the work.

On the other hand the booklet is a piece of student work which can be helpful even in your later professional life as a teacher. Many good ideas in different fields were compiled into this unique book of reference. These ideas of the different fields can be used as impulses for the later conceptualization of English lessons at school.
